Exploring Ohio’s Bicentennial Barns

In 2003, Ohio recognized its 200th year of statehood. To celebrate, Ohio chose a barn in each of its 88 counties and painted them with the Bicentennial logo.

Disappearing landmarks

Many of the barns selected for the Bicentennial Barn program were built in the 1800s. Since the 2003 celebration, some have been repainted. Some have been re-sided. Some have been left to fade, while others have fallen apart and still others have been torn down. What started as fun outings with our young children in 2003 has turned into a fascination with how these structures have changed in the twenty years since.
