Lucas County (Extra) – September 3, 2025

This Barn is a mystery and needs some additional research. I don’t think it’s an official Bicentennial Barn.

I became aware of this Barn through a Google Map that a fellow enthusiast left for us to find.

A truck was pulling out from this farm when I arrived and I spoke with the owner, Jeff Rae, who gave me permission to park and take pictures.

Jeff told me that when Scott Hagan (The Barn Artist) arrived with his scaffolding to paint this Barn, it was amusing to watch him arrange parts of his homemade scaffolding to get up on the wall and start painting. Jeff’s comment was that OSHA would never approve of his setup.

Scott didn’t finish that night and Jeff told me he stayed the night there and finished the next morning.

Scott apparently told Jeff that it felt odd being so close to the Michigan border, “like it would be easy to fall off the edge of Ohio”, and indeed, the Michigan/Ohio border is only a half mile to the north.

Jeff pointed out that the other sides of his Barn have been resided, but not the northern side with the Logo. However, it looks as though the Logo has been repainted recently—the details are crisp and the paint is newer than the red wall underneath.

The mystery: here are some points that have me perplexed.

  1. Wilkinson1 and the Barn Artist’s website record that the Lucas County Barn was on Crissey Road, to the south.
  2. The Bicentennial Logo painted on this Barn has the “TM” mark prominently displayed. I’ve not seen that on many other “official” Barns.
  3. There’s a “S. Hagan” signature on the bottom left of the Logo, along with a numeral “5”, but the Lucas County Barn was supposedly the 82nd Barn painted.
  4. This Barn’s Logo isn’t very prominent. It only takes up about a third of the Barn’s side. That’s not a strong indicator that this isn’t “official”, but it seems unusual.

There is more to come on this Barn.

Where to visit and view: 12155 Sylvania-Metamora Road in Berkey (41.71516, -83.83640). There is a private drive leading from the road to the Barn, but be careful to not block the owners’ traffic into and out of their property.
