Ashland County – November 4, 2023

I was on my way to Columbus for the day with a friend (who was driving) and was able to photograph this Barn both going down (SB) and coming back (NB).

We spent the day at The Ohio Pen Show since we’re both fountain pen aficionados (in my case, the more enthusiastic kind than the knowledgeable kind).

Four things stick out in my mind about this trip.

1) It was the day after my friend’s (other) car was totaled by a deer strike, so we were driving his wife’s red Honda.

2) I didn’t find any fountain pens to purchase, but did pick up a handful of tiny gold mechanical pencils for a dollar each. I now wish I’d bought the guy out. They’re cute, fit in your pocket perfectly, very useful and just the right price.

A tasty stout of some kind

3) After striking out twice finding a brewery with food, we finally settled on a third spot (Spires Social Brewing Company) that had a visiting taco truck from California (he said he was wandering the midwest). After settling down with a beer each, we discovered it was a vegetarian taco truck—not really our thing. We were past caring (and with beers in our hands, we were committed) and so ordered. And were pleasantly surprised.
We were behind the Graeter’s Ice Cream shop off Polaris—perhaps we should have simply had double scoops and called it a day.

4) Because I wasn’t driving, I was able to capture the three Barns (Medina, Ashland and Delaware) on i71 (in one day) between Cleveland and Columbus.

Where to view: north-bound i71, after passing under County Road 995.

Where to visit: 974 County Road 1600, Ashland
